How do I know if I have periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease may not be evident in the early stage. It is important to follow up with your general dentist for regular cleanings and checkups. Such symptoms may indicate that you have periodontal disease include:
-
Oral inflammation
-
Tender or swollen gums
-
Bleeding when brushing or flossing
-
Frequent food impaction
-
Gum recession
-
Bad breath
-
Changes in your bite
-
Loose teeth
What is non-surgical treatment?
The first step of periodontal therapy is scaling and root planning. This procedure involves deeper cleaning under the gum under local anesthesia. We remove plaque and calculus (tartar) that has accumulated under the gum line settling into the periodontal pockets. The purpose of this procedure is to reduce the bacterial population under the care and lower inflammation. It is essential to return to the office for periodontal maintenance on a regular basis.
What happens on my first appointment with the Periodontist?
On your first visit to our office, you will undergo a head/neck examination and periodontal examination. We take measurements of your gum “pockets” and gum recession. It is usually painless during the examination. Radiographs are taken or reviewed from your dental records to evaluate your bone level and pathology. Your findings and options will be thoroughly discussed. Our goal is providing you with a complete understanding of your condition and treatment needs.
